How can I group categories for budgeting purposes?
Hello Wallet automatically detects the category of a transaction (Restaurants/Bars, Coffee Shops, Grocery). But the categories are too granular for my needs. I don't budget $12 for Coffee Shops, $88 for Restaurants/Bars and $200 for Grocery -- I simply budget $300 for "Food".
I want to be able to have a category called "Food" that has Restaurants/Bars, Coffee Shops and Grocery in it. And another one called "Fixed expenses" or something like that for my Rent, Utilities, Parking, etc.
The only solution I currently see is to create a new category, say for "Food", then go into my ledger and manually change each item's category to "Food" over and over -- and then constantly check my ledger, changing any/all new items to "Food" -- basically forever...
Obviously the above is a horrible user experience as I'll never actually know how I'm doing on a budget unless I'm constantly reviewing every transaction that comes into my ledger, changing it to my custom one -- which would violate the very reason for using Hello Wallet in the first place.
Grouping categories was the major reason I switched from Mint to Hello Wallet. My local Key Bank manager told me this was a feature that separated it from Mint but so far I can't find it.
So, how can I just group several default categories into one?
As mentioned, it is possible to create custom categories in the Plan portion of your Budget. However, instead of individually editing each transaction so that it appears with the custom category you created, you can utilize our Bulk Edit feature so that these expenses are categorized to your liking.
